Cate at The Gate

Saturday 8th February

There were no photographs allowed, so here is an *artist’s interpretation of the gig:

To briefly explain the drawing, in the foreground you can see a crowd of attentive Cate fans / 6 music listeners / reviewers listening and nodding heads sagely. In front of them is a very enthusiastic tall man who is having THE TIME OF HIS LIFE dancing at the front and pulling up uncomfortable looking women for a boogie in front of everyone in the 300+ capacity venue. And good on him too (although I desperately wanted to hide in a safe place whenever he came anywhere near me. Interestingly, I felt the same intense intrepidation and adopted the same heel digging stance as when I was at a school disco and the slow songs started to play.)

On the right hand side you can see Cate, magnificent in voice, knarly guitar and bowl hair do. Next to her, the drummer, who if you squinted looked a little bit like Dave Grohl. Then the bass player, known to many as Sweet Baboo (pretty chuffed with the ‘in joke’ whiskers I’ve drawn, although admittedly having to point them out just in case you miss them has made it a lot less funny). And finally the tall one with cheekbones and curly hair, or H. Hawkline. Gosh can’t he sing incredibly high? All the band were dressed in black and did a good line in velvet underground stage craft. The following week I went out and bought the album (on gatefold vinyl – oooh!) Job done.
